The University of Arizona Rugby Club was established in 1969. Over
the years hundreds of outstanding Arizona student athletes have
taken part in the world’s most dynamic international sport in
Arizona and around the world.
We submit that our players work diligently and enjoy their rugby
experiences both on and off the field.
Equally important, though, are the life lessons learned by playing
a very hard sport. Our players develop lasting bonds with their
teammates. They generally excel at school and inevitably they
succeed in life.
Ultimately, they understand the value of competition.
The University of Arizona rugby program is a well-rounded, worthy
endeavor that requires outside support.
The University funds the program roughly $5,000 of the over
$100,000 for its annual regular season operations.
Why is Funding Necessary?
The University of Arizona rugby team is the only college rugby team
in Southern Arizona. The closest team is located at Arizona State
University, over 120 miles away.
The team plays in the SoCal Conference, which stretches from Tucson
to San Luis Obispo, home of the CalPoly San Luis Obispo Mustangs.
In addition, the Wildcats must travel to other universities
throughout the United States in order to find suitable
competition.
The process is necessary for all four University of Arizona
sides.
You see, we insure that all of our players have an opportunity to
compete and develop life skills from the competition.
Our varsity and junior varsity teams play teams of the conference
and other varsity programs. Our developmental programs also play
other colleges and sometimes clubs throughout the southwestern
United States.
The University has recently moved rugby onto campus. The team now
plays its matches and practices on the Rincon Vista facility.
Rincon Vista is a multi-use field that requires capital upgrades in
order to stage matches. The team must fundraise in order to
properly outfit their new home. It’s not like we’re spending a lot
on overhead. None of our players are on athletic scholarship. If
anybody is on scholarship, they are because they have earned
academic aid.
Yes, it’s a throwback program. That’s why so many of our players
and their parents love it.
Accountability Through the University of Arizona
Foundation
All cash donations are routed through the University of Arizona
Foundation, a highly respected 501©(3) unit that supports the
University of Arizona.
All contributions are tax deductible, fully accountable, and
directed exactly where donors wish their contribution to go.
All contribution checks are made payable to the University of
Arizona Foundation—Rugby. On the memo line you may indicate to
which specific UA rugby program you wish your donation to
support.
Matching Gifts
Matching gifts are always welcome. If you have an employer that
allows you to contribute to a 501©(3) organization attached to a
major university, the University of Arizona Foundation can manage
it.

Alumni Association Annual Dues. The Alumni Association Annual Dues
are set at $100 per year. Payments may be made on an annual,
semi-annual, or quarterly basis. Quarterly credit card deductions
are available through the University of Arizona Foundation.
Alumni Association dues are used to cover club operations, purchase
equipment and fund alumni events. Alumni are encouraged to
contribute at a variety of levels each year.
Specialized Funding. The following special funds are
restricted for use in the following ways:
William M. Clements Rugby Endowment. The William M. Clements
Rugby Endowment is named in honor of the late Golden Eagle
Distributors Inc. founder Bill Clements. Mr. Clements was
introduced to rugby at the University of California. As an
undergrad he played gridiron football at Washington. It was at Cal,
where he earned his Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, that he
first played rugby as a hooker. When he moved to Tucson and
established Golden Eagle Distributors, he developed an enduring and
dynamic relationship with the University of Arizona rugby
program.
The William M. Clements Rugby Endowment fund grows each year. The
interest is used to support official team activities per the
direction of the Alumni Association and the Head Coach.
Clive Evans Fund for International Tours. The tour fund is
established in the name of Clive Evans, the legendary Welshman who
helped the University of Arizona stage its first tour to England
and Wales in 1978. Funds will be used to help perpetuate the
University of Arizona’s touring tradition.
The Mark Shively Fund for Player Development. Mark Shively was a
player and an assistant coach who was claimed by cancer in 1991.
Mark’s major concern was the development of underclassmen recruits.
The funds generated by the Shively Fund are used specifically for
developmental projects including travel for underclassmen
developmental teams.
Conrad Joyner Fund for International Study. Dr. Conrad Joyner was
a vibrant supporter of the University of Arizona rugby program. As
a Fullbright scholar in Australia in the 60s, Joyner learned a love
for rugby football and international study. Conrad traveled with
the Wildcats from Australia to Scotland.
Funds generated by the Joyner Fund are used to help UA student
athletes attend foreign schools and foreign students to attend the
University of Arizona and play rugby.
